History
On September 09, 2009, the governments of both countries signed an agreement to officially establish a Confucian Institute in Beijing, China with the witness of His Excellency Jummali Xayason, the former President of the Lao PDR and His Excellency Hu Jintao, the former President of the Republic of China and his delegates.
On March 23, 2010, the Confucius Institute was opened officially at the National University of Laos, which was established on the basis of cooperation between the National University of the Lao PDR and the Guangxi Ethnic University of the People's Republic of China, the purpose is to develop human resources in Chinese language, increase cooperation and cultural exchange between the two Lao-Chinese nations.
Mission
The Confucius Institute ("CI") is located in Dongdok Campus. It is an institution with the same status as a faculty in the organization and under the macro-level supervision of the National University of Laos . Generally, it has a role of promoting cooperation and exchange in education, syllabus developing, training, culture and science between Lao PDR and China, specifically between the Lao National University and the Guangxi Ethnic University of China and other Confucian Institutes in China in order to develop human resources inside and outside the National University by organizing teaching and learning to develop academic staff, researchers, scientists and provide academia services to society in the field of Chinese language, business administration and technology, organize scientific research and act for the National University in raising funds and obtaining academicals assistance, funding for the construction of infrastructure and the development of personnel in the Chinese language, etc.
Vision
The Confucius Institute will become a center for the promotion of Lao-Chinese language and cultural exchange cooperation, a platform for the exchange of Lao-Chinese culture and knowledge, a center for Chinese language level tests, a place to develop human resources to be at an academic leading of Chinese language and the related fields according to the demands of society and the assignment of the Party-State, to build personnel with qualifications, a solid morals, and knowledge in scientific research to meet quality personnel for the socio-economic development of the nation and regional and international integration.

Curriculum and Instruction
The Confucius Institute has opened a short-term for general teaching-learning Chinese Language course, specific Chinese Language and a bachelor's degree course in the field of Chinese language teacher. The details are as below:
Chinese short-term training course:
The Confucius Institute offers general Chinese language training course, it opens for 2 semesters in one academic year. 1 semester consists of 16 weeks. 1st semester starts from September to January; 2nd semester starts from March to July .
Study time is divided into 5 periods:
- Monday-Thursday morning at 08:00 - 11:00
- Monday-Thursday afternoon at 13:30 - 16:30;
- Monday-Thursday evening at 18:00 - 20:00;
- Saturday-Sunday morning at 08:00 - 12:00 and
- Saturday - Sunday afternoon at 13:30 - 17:30.
Teaching – learning is divided into 3 levels: Elementary level 1-2, Intermediate level 3-4, and Advanced level 5-6.
Specific Chinese Language Training Course
The Confucius Institute, in addition to having a general Chinese language training course for society, also has a special Chinese language training course for secondary school teachers who teach Chinese and staff and teachers who are interested in learning Chinese in general. In addition, Confucius Institute is also a center for the Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) and the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSKK).
Bachelor's degree program for Chinese Language Student-Teacher
This course has a 2+2 study system, in which the first 2 years are studied in the Lao PDR and the last 2 years students who pass the standard study at the Guangxi Ethnic University, Republic of China under the support of the National Chinese-Foreign Language Exchange Center and the Guangxi Ethnic University of the People's Republic of China.
