Government scholarships
Every year before starting a new academic year, the Lao government through the Ministry of Education and Sports has provided the numbers of scholarship quotas (scholarships go to 20% of pupils who have newly finished from grade 7 at upper secondary school level.) Giving the scholarships, the Ministry of Education and Sports gives the authority of making decisions to the Departments Education and Sports in each Province and in Vientiane Capital to select the outstanding pupils to receive the scholarships, totaling 10% of the scholarship quota. The authorities set up the processes to select the targets in order to align with the government’s policy, including students with outstanding examination scores, the best pupils who have the best average of academic year scores, poor families, ethnic groups and pupils with disabilities, and the ones who have achieved throughout the following criteria as:
- The one who gets the top outstanding scores in the national examination in 4 subjects in the country.
- The one who wins the criteria of best of the best certificates (red certificate)
- The number 1 outstanding student of each province.
- Students of minority ethnic groups who qualify to receive education scholarships.
Beside these, the government gives 10% of education scholarships to universities make the decision in the selection of pupils who get the top scores to receive scholarships throughout the examination process.
The pupils who have received the scholarships from the education and sport office in the district level and the quotas of NUOL’s scholarships do not pay for education fees and they also get a monthly allowance.
